Field Trip – Bent Mountain Walks

Join us for an autumn morning of birding up on the mountain. Robin Austin (540-676-0951) will escort the group to several birdy areas in and around the Bent Mountain Center (formerly Bent Mountain Elementary school) and then walk the surrounding area. Walking is level, but wear waterproof shoes as we will be walking on the grassy roadside. Please note the specific start time (8:30) and be aware of the time shift off of daylight savings time.

Directions: The Community Center is at 10148 Tinsley Lane, Bent Mountain VA 24059

Field Trip – Boutetourt Center at Greenfield

Second Wednesday Bird Hike – Botetourt Center at Greenfield – 8:00 am

We’ll be back to Greenfield for a bird walk on the Cherry Blossom Trail at Greenfield. We will walk around Greenfield Lake and possibly to the pond beyond. The walk will be mostly flat walking for about 1 mile each way. Bring your spotting scope if you have one.
Directions: From I-81 heading toward Daleville, take Exit 150B, and follow the signs to Route 220N. Go about 3.5 miles and then make a left turn, heading west onto International Parkway at the Botetourt Center (Greenfield Education and Training Center), across from the entrance to Ashley Plantation. Park in the second lot on right.

Field Trip – Starkey Wetlands

Starkey Wetlands Bird Walk – Saturday – 8:00am

Leader: David Frye (248-459-6783) We will visit a trail that moves out from the back of the South County Library building and across a boardwalk that traverses a cattail marsh. We’ll continue on to an adjoining sports field complex and walk the woodsy perimeter edges there. This trip would be an excellent local trip for new birders! Directions: We’ll meet up in the parking area on the east side of the South County Library (6303 Merriman Rd, Cave Spring 24018).

Second Wednesday Local Bird Walk – Garst Mill Park

Second Wednesday Bird Hike at Garst Mill Park 9:00am, Leader: Dave Frye (248-459-6783) Join us for a mid-December Wednesday bird walk at a local park in Cave Spring. Garst Mill park runs along a section of Mud Lick Creek and is an easy paved path with interesting bird life. Listen closely and you may hear an Eastern Screech Owl quavering. Directions: From Brambleton Avenue in Cave Spring turn onto Garst Mill Road SW and head NNW. After almost 1/2 mile, turn onto WB Halevan Road. The entrance road is the very first left tum off of Halevan Road.

Members’ Sharing Night – Photos and festive holiday snacks

This is our year-end meeting during which we marvel at the excellence of our club photographers and the beauty of their subjects. So many memorable bird photographs have been shared with our Membership over the years and we are set for another terrific sampling on this night. This is also the night for Members to bring their favorite holiday snacks. There will be much rejoicing!

If you’d care to share some of your photographs on this evening, simply load 4-5 of your favorite pics onto a flash drive and bring it with you!

Christmas Bird Count – Annual Event

Christmas Bird Count – RVBC Team count – Compiler, Bill Hunley (540-467-3477)

Conducting our part in the nation’s annual one-day count of birds in North America, teams for birders from RVBC will log all of the birds that they observe and report resultant findings to Bill Hunley. This is an excellent day of camaraderie and fun. And it’s one of those activities that got a number of us really interested in birding. If you’re new to birding or are a newer RVBC Member, this is a great event in which to participate.

Individuals wishing to join in can contact Bill and he will work to find a team that can use the assistance. RVBC Membership is not required. This event is open to anyone that wishes to join in.

Field Trip – Roanoke Sewage Treatment Plant

Join us for a walk around the Sewage Treatment Plant (where else would you rather be?). Entrance to the STP is by special permit and trip participants must all enter at the same time and stay together with our leader. This site is one of the best spots for viewing shorebirds in the Roanoke Valley. The property includes inpoundments, sludge ponds, mudflats, riparian habitat and woodlands. Besides shorebirds, we can expect to see resident hawks and possibly ravens and fish crows. The walking is mostly flat with a short steep trail. Sturdy waterproof boots are recommended as it often is muddy.
Directions: Meet at the Greenway parking lot off of Bennington Street near the bridge over the Roanoke River; the entrance to the parking area is between the bridge and Brownlee Avenue. Note that Thirteenth Street SE changes names to Bennington Street at the bridge over the Roanoke River. After the group has gathered, we will caravan or walk the short distance to the STP, so please arrive minutes early.
